Lake Mills

Lake Mills, WI, is located on the shores of Rock Lake in Jefferson County. The initial settler to the area, Captain Joseph Keyes, named the area Lake Mills. He chose the name because of the saw mill and grist mill he built to use power from Rock Lake. 

The nearby lakes have always been important to Lake Mills’ history. In fact, in 1866, the village of Lake Mills changed its name to Tyranena, a supposed Indigenous name that meant “sparkling waters.” However, they quickly changed the name back to Lake Mills in 1867. The name has stuck, and the once small village is not a thriving city.
